DLIS Semiannual Meeting

New students lined up patiently waiting for the creation of their student ID cards after a quick visit to Debbie Martinez for their nametags and meeting materials for the DLIS Semiannual Meeting.  Those who had not done so also had the chance to pick up their new laptops in room 123 before orientation began.  New students were briefly introduced to each other and attending staff members, as well as to courses LIS204 and 205.  A light dinner followed, giving new students, faculty and returning students the chance to mingle.  After dinner Dr. Olson welcomed everyone, discussing relevant DLIS news.  Most notably, Dr. Olson announced the end of the comprehensive exam, which is to be replaced by the E-portfolio as the graduation requirement.  The creation of the e-portfolio played a big role in the night’s meeting, with recent graduate Stephanie Elestro providing her e-portfolio as an example.  We also heard about Dr. Angel’s academic service learning projects as students presented their efforts demonstrating the importance of hands on experience during out studies.  The discussion of online courses rounded out the night’s events, with students dispersing to different rooms to listen in on course introductions and expectations.
