Letter from the Editor

Dear DLIS Community,

We are now at the end of the Fall 2016 semester, but the changing of the seasons here on the East Coast brings with it the same feeling of hope and magic as the beginning of a new school year. There are endless possibilities–and a season of celebrations–ahead of us. This year especially, as our program moves completely online, our focus as students, faculty, and administrators at DLIS has to be on making meaningful connections regardless of physical distances and technological boundaries. I know this all sounds a little cliche, but our community is stronger when we work together toward a shared goal of inclusion and support.Winter Carnival

In this issue of the DLIS eNewsletter, I wanted to share stories from DLIS students and faculty about the work they’re doing in their communities. We hear from DLIS students about their experiences working in the field, and I share a reflection about my study abroad adventure this summer in Korea, in the new DIspatches from the Field column. This issue also includes updates about events hosted by DLIS and DLISSA, our ALA Student Chapter, and a report about the SLA Student Swing event this past September. I also spoke with Dr. Lee about her work redefining diversity in librarianship and what that means for the future of the profession.

Finally, among the exciting new programs that DLIS introduced late last year are travel grants for students interested in going to professional conferences and helping with outreach by manning the DLIS table for a few hours in the vendor area. I’ve asked students who received travel grants to share their experiences in the eNewsletter, so we hear from students (including myself) about the highs and lows of professional conferences and all that they entail.

I hope that the pieces you read in this issue inspire you to reach out to the DLIS community and utilize the resources that are available to you, whether you’re a current student or alumni. Librarianship is all about knowing your community–why not get to know DLIS?

Best,
